Hennepin County is located in Minnesota and contains the state’s most populous city, Minneapolis. Over a million people live in Hennepin County and one in every five Minnesotans calls it home. It is included in the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Early History

Hennepin County draws its name from 17th-century explorer Father Louis Hennepin, who wrote about and named the famous Saint Anthony Falls located in the area. The waterfalls were the only falls on the Upper Mississippi River and were a sacred site for the native Americans who originally called the area home. Hennepin’s written descriptions of the majesty of the falls attracted tourists and settlers who would establish the metropolis cities of Minneapolis and St. Anthony, which would eventually combine to fully capitalize on the economic power of the falls. The natural falls were converted to a constructed spillway in 1869 after erosion caused a collapse.

Hennepin County Today

These days, Hennepin County is mostly characterized not by natural waterfalls but by its major city of Minneapolis. The falls responsible for the settlement of the area were converted to a series of dams and bridges in the 1950s and 60s. As of 2014, the estimated median income was $76,202.87 for individuals and $92,353.46 for households. Hennepin County has become the wealthiest county in Minnesota and one of the 100 highest-income counties in the United States.
