Minnetonka, Minnesota

Minnetonka is a suburban city in Minnesota that lies eight miles west of Minneapolis with a population of 49,734, according to the 2010 US census,

The city is named after the Dakota word for “great water” partly because the it includes the eastern tip of Lake Minnetonka, one of the largest lakes in Minnesota. Settled first by Dakota and Ojibwa Indians, Minnetonka was first established as a farming and mill town in the mid-19th century. Subsequently, the city eventually became a suburban center that grew by leaps and bounds.

Despite Minnetonka’s speedy development over the years, residents can access 49 community parks, many miles of maintained trailways and over 1,000 acres of public open space, with natural scenery that includes forests, wetlands and prairies.

Minnetonka is the home city of both the global conglomerate Cargill—which is the largest privately held corporation in the U.S. in terms of revenue—and UnitedHealth Group, the largest health care company in the world by revenue.

In 2017, Money magazine declared Minnetonka one of “100 Best Places to Live in America” based on such factors as economic health, cost of living factors and public school performance.
