Minnetrista, Minnesota

Due to the twisted land and lake formations caused during the Minnesota’s long glacial period, the city of Minnetrista is believed to be named after the Dakota phrase for “crooked water”. Settled first by the Mdewakanton sub-tribe of the Dakota, Minnetrista features a set prehistoric Indian mounds in its north highlands, much like in the city limits of its neighbor Mound.

The Hennepin County area that includes Minnetrista was settled by Europeans in the mid-19th century. Minnetrista itself was first known as German Home Township, named because of the large number of residents of German stock. It was officially named as a village with a fully organized local government during a meeting in a log cabin in 1859.

By the early 20th century, one of America’s first transcontinental auto routes, the Yellowstone Trail, was built to traverse through a portion of Minnetrista that border the city of Victoria, bringing a steady stream of visitors traveling west. This made the rural agricultural township a stopover and popular tourist destination with hotels, cabins, a prominent boat landing, and summer camps.

In 1960, Minnetrista’s government took on a municipal structure and became known as the Village of Minnetrista, and by the early ‘70s, Minnetrista was fully incorporated as a statuatory city.
