Located 20 miles west of Minneapolis on the western shores of Lake Minnetonka, the city of Mound, Minnesota, is about three square miles in size and has a population of 9,052. The town is geographically defined by its many lakes, including Black Lake, Dutch Lake, Lake Langdon, Saunders Lake, and Seton Lake.

The name of Mound was derived from the prehistoric Indian mounds found within the city limits. Mound was populated by Dakota Indians before being settled by Europeans as a village in the mid-19th century and incorporated as a city in 1912.

When local garden implement manufacturer Mound Metalcraft started making metal toys as a sideline in the mid-‘40s, the toys took off in popularity, and the company eventually named itself Tonka Toys Incorporated in 1955. Tonka trucks were eventually inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame.

In 2012, Bloomberg Businessweek named Mound Minnesota’s Best Place to Raise Your Kids, based on factors like education, economy, crime, amenities, air quality, and diversity.

Mound contains a myriad of lakes, including Black Lake, Dutch Lake, Lake Langdon, Saunders Lake, and Seton Lake. Along with Lake Minnetonka, Mound boasts 32 parks, 311 public dock sites, a state of the art skate park, and the 23-mile-long Dakota Rail Trail.
